A Fortress Above Nafplio: Exploring Palamidi

Perched dramatically on a hilltop overlooking Nafplio, Palamidi Fortress is one of Greece’s most impressive and well-preserved fortifications. Built by the Venetians in the early 18th century, this stronghold played a crucial role in the region’s history, from Ottoman rule to the Greek War of Independence. Today, it offers visitors a blend of rich history, awe-inspiring architecture, and breathtaking panoramic views of the town and the Argolic Gulf.

A Brief History 🏰

Constructed between 1711 and 1714 during the second Venetian occupation, Palamidi was designed as an advanced military fortress with eight bastions, each serving as an independent defensive unit. However, it was soon taken over by the Ottomans in 1715, remaining under their control until 1822, when Greek revolutionaries captured it in a daring night raid. The fortress later served as a prison, with Theodoros Kolokotronis, a hero of the Greek War of Independence, among its most famous captives.

The Famous 999 Steps… or Fewer? 🔢👣

Legend has it that there are 999 steps leading up to Palamidi from Nafplio’s Old Town, though some claim the actual number is lower. Either way, the climb is rewarding, offering spectacular views at every turn. If the steep hike seems daunting, don’t worry—you can also reach the fortress by car via a winding road that leads directly to the entrance.
