Bourtzi Fortress

Visit Bourtzi Fortress, Nafplio’s famous island castle! Once a Venetian stronghold and an executioner’s home, it now stands as a picturesque symbol of the town.

Bourtzi: The Jewel of Nafplio’s Harbor

Floating gracefully in the middle of Nafplio’s harbor, Bourtzi Fortress is one of the town’s most recognizable landmarks. Built in 1473 by the Venetians, this small but strategic island fortress has seen centuries of warfare, pirate attacks, and even served as the home of Nafplio’s official executioner. Today, it remains a charming and photogenic attraction, best viewed from the waterfront or visited by boat.

A Fortress at Sea 🌊🏰

Bourtzi was originally constructed by the Venetians to protect Nafplio’s harbor from invaders and pirates. The Ottomans later added more defenses, turning it into a formidable sea stronghold. After Greece’s independence, Bourtzi took on several roles, including a residence for executioners (since people feared having them live on the mainland) and later as a hotel in the 20th century.
